Description

Home shirt worn by Arsenal F.C. during the 1988–89 and 1989–90 seasons, a defining period under manager George Graham that delivered one of the most dramatic title wins in English football history before a challenging defence the following year.

The shirt features a bold red base with classic white sleeves, detailed with red and black striping running down both sleeves. It is finished with a white neckline, decorated with red and black accents, creating a sharp and instantly recognisable late-1980s Arsenal design that became synonymous with the club’s emergence as a dominant force under Graham.

The 1988–89 season is forever remembered for Arsenal’s extraordinary title win at Anfield. Needing a two-goal victory against champions Liverpool F.C. on the final day, Arsenal produced a historic 2–0 win thanks to Michael Thomas’s unforgettable injury-time goal. With both sides finishing level on points and goal difference, Arsenal claimed the First Division title on total goals scored, ending an 18-year league drought in the most dramatic fashion possible.

That triumph was built on a disciplined and resilient squad. Alan Smith led the line as the club’s top scorer, while the defensive foundation was anchored by club stalwart David O'Leary and captain Tony Adams. Midfield creativity came from emerging talents such as Paul Merson, who was named PFA Young Player of the Year.

The 1989–90 campaign saw Arsenal attempt to defend their title but ultimately fall short. Despite a strong start that briefly saw them lead the table, a difficult winter run, including a series of away defeats, derailed their challenge. The Gunners finished 4th in the First Division, while Liverpool F.C. reclaimed the championship.

In cup competitions, Arsenal reached the FA Cup semi-final stage but were beaten 3–2 after extra time by Manchester United F.C., another painful Wembley-era setback in a season of near misses. Key milestones still defined the year, including David O’Leary breaking the club appearance record with his 622nd match, underlining his importance to Graham’s side.

Across both seasons, Alan Smith remained the primary attacking threat, finishing among the top scorers again, while the defensive unit continued to define Arsenal’s identity as one of the most organised teams in English football.

Worn through a period of triumph and transition, this home shirt represents both the pinnacle of Arsenal’s late-1980s success and the foundations of the modern, disciplined era established under George Graham.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
