Description
Away shirt worn by Arsenal F.C. between 1988 and 1991, a period that saw the club establish itself as the dominant force in English football under manager George Graham. Across three seasons, Arsenal captured two First Division titles and built a reputation for defensive excellence, discipline, and resilience.
The shirt features a striking yellow base complemented by navy sleeves, enhanced with yellow detailing running down each arm. A navy collar with yellow and red stripes provides a distinctive finishing touch, creating one of the most recognisable away designs of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The shirt was first worn during the unforgettable 1988–89 season, when Arsenal ended an 18-year wait for the league title in one of football's most dramatic finales. On the final day of the campaign, the Gunners travelled to Anfield needing to defeat reigning champions Liverpool F.C. by two clear goals. Leading 1–0 through an Alan Smith header, Arsenal secured the title in the dying seconds when Michael Thomas raced through to score a famous stoppage-time winner. The 2–0 victory meant Arsenal finished level on points and goal difference with Liverpool but claimed the championship on goals scored.
The following season proved more challenging as Arsenal attempted to defend their crown. Despite leading the table during parts of the campaign, a difficult run after Christmas saw their title challenge fade, resulting in a 4th-place finish. Nevertheless, key figures such as Alan Smith, Tony Adams and David O'Leary remained central to the team's success.
Arsenal responded emphatically in 1990–91 with one of the greatest league campaigns in English football history. Despite a two-point deduction following a mass confrontation with Manchester United F.C., George Graham's side stormed to the First Division title, losing just one league match all season. Conceding only 18 goals in 38 games, the team became known as the "Almost Invincibles" and finished comfortably clear at the top of the table.
This remarkable period was built around Arsenal's legendary back line of Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould and David O'Leary. Further forward, Alan Smith provided the goals, winning two First Division Golden Boots, while talents such as Michael Thomas, Paul Merson and David Rocastle played key roles throughout the era.
Worn during two title-winning campaigns and one of the most iconic moments in English football history, this away shirt remains a symbol of Arsenal's rise to dominance under George Graham and the foundation of one of the club's greatest ever teams.
