Description
Home shirt worn by Arsenal F.C. during the 1996–97 and 1997–98 seasons, a transformative two-year period that saw the arrival of Arsène Wenger and the complete tactical and cultural reinvention of the club. This era marked Arsenal’s evolution from the final remnants of the George Graham “Boring, Boring Arsenal” identity into one of Europe’s most dynamic and successful attacking sides.
The shirt features Arsenal’s classic red body with white sleeves, finished with a white collar and cuffs detailed with red striping, and a red neckline with white accents. Clean, traditional, and instantly recognisable, it became the defining visual identity of Arsenal’s first Wenger era success story.
The 1996–97 season represented the beginning of revolution. Wenger officially took charge in October 1996 after a brief caretaker period, becoming the club’s first manager from outside the British Isles. Arsenal finished 3rd in the Premier League with 68 points, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification on goal difference in a tightly contested race involving Liverpool F.C. and Newcastle United F.C..
While cup competitions ended early, the foundations of change were already visible. Wenger immediately introduced new training methods, dietary discipline, and a more modern scouting network. The squad also featured the early influence of Patrick Vieira, who would become central to Arsenal’s midfield identity. Up front, Ian Wright remained the club’s primary goalscorer, finishing the season with 23 goals in all competitions.
The 1997–98 campaign became one of the most important seasons in Arsenal’s history. Wenger’s first full season brought immediate success as the club overturned a significant points gap to win the Premier League title with 78 points, securing the championship with games to spare. The season also featured a dominant late run of form that confirmed Arsenal as the strongest side in England.
The FA Cup completed the historic domestic double. Arsenal defeated Newcastle United F.C. 2–0 in the final at Wembley, with goals from Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka sealing the trophy. It was only the second domestic double in the club’s history, matching the achievement of 1970–71.
The team was built around a perfectly balanced core. The legendary defensive unit of David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould, and captain Tony Adams provided stability and leadership. In midfield, the arrival of Vieira and Emmanuel Petit transformed Arsenal into a physically dominant and technically advanced side, while Dennis Bergkamp’s brilliance between the lines elevated the attack to a new level.
Alongside him, Ian Wright provided crucial goals during the early phase of Wenger’s tenure before Nicolas Anelka’s emergence added explosive pace and youthful finishing to the forward line.
Worn across the dawn of the Arsène Wenger era, this shirt represents one of the most significant turning points in Arsenal’s history, bridging the end of the old English defensive identity and the beginning of a modern, continental, double-winning dynasty.
