Description
Home shirt worn by Arsenal F.C. during the 2005–06 season, one of the most historic and emotional campaigns in the club’s modern era as the Gunners bid farewell to Highbury after 93 years.
The shirt featured a rich burgundy base with elegant gold detailing throughout, finished with a matching burgundy collar. Designed as a tribute to Arsenal’s earliest days at Highbury, it echoed the club’s original redcurrant colours worn in 1913 and was used exclusively during this final season at their legendary home.
Under Arsène Wenger, Arsenal endured a mixed domestic campaign but wrote themselves into European history. They finished 4th in the Premier League with 67 points, securing Champions League qualification on the final day of the season. Their league form was inconsistent, but the squad remained resilient, especially in Europe where they produced one of the most remarkable runs in Champions League history.
The defining storyline of the season was Arsenal’s journey to their first-ever UEFA Champions League Final. The team set a competition record of 10 consecutive clean sheets, eliminating European heavyweights such as Real Madrid CF, Juventus F.C. and Villarreal CF along the way. However, heartbreak followed in the final in Paris, where despite leading through a Sol Campbell header, Arsenal eventually fell 2–1 to FC Barcelona after playing over an hour with ten men following Jens Lehmann’s early dismissal.
The season also marked the farewell of several club legends. Patrick Vieira departed after years of leadership in midfield, while Dennis Bergkamp retired after an iconic career at Highbury. Robert Pires also left the club, bringing an end to one of Arsenal’s most technically gifted eras.
The final day at Highbury provided a fitting emotional climax. In a 4–2 victory over Wigan Athletic F.C., club legend Thierry Henry scored a hat-trick and famously knelt to kiss the pitch, sealing his place in the stadium’s history as Arsenal closed the curtain on an unforgettable chapter.
Remembered as both an ending and a beginning, the 2005–06 season remains one of the most significant in Arsenal’s history, defined by European glory runs, farewell legends, and the emotional goodbye to Highbury, all encapsulated in this iconic burgundy shirt.
