Description
Home shirt worn by Aston Villa F.C. during the 1995–96 and 1996–97 seasons, a highly successful period under manager Brian Little in which the club evolved from relegation contenders into consistent European challengers, driven by a strong core of experienced leaders and emerging attacking talent.
The shirt features a maroon base with light blue sleeves, complemented by a light blue collar and neckline and maroon cuffs. The design blends Villa’s traditional claret and blue identity in a bold mid-1990s style, strongly associated with one of the club’s most competitive modern eras.
The 1995–96 season marked a dramatic rise in fortunes. Villa secured major silverware by winning the League Cup, defeating Leeds United F.C. 3–0 in the final at Wembley, with goals from Savo Milošević, Ian Taylor, and Dwight Yorkesealing a memorable victory. In the Premier League, Villa finished 4th, securing UEFA Cup qualification, while also reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in a strong all-round campaign.
The squad was built around key figures such as captain Andy Townsend, whose leadership and work rate anchored the midfield, and the prolific Dwight Yorke, who enjoyed a breakout season with 25 goals in all competitions. Defensive stability came from Gareth Southgate and Ugo Ehiogu, with Mark Bosnich providing consistency in goal.
The following 1996–97 season saw Villa consolidate their progress, finishing 5th in the Premier League and maintaining European qualification for a second consecutive year via the UEFA Fair Play ranking. While cup competitions ended earlier, the team remained competitive throughout the league campaign and continued to build stability under Brian Little.
Dwight Yorke once again led the scoring charts with 20 goals in all competitions, supported by contributions from Savo Milošević, while experienced figures such as Steve Staunton and Ian Taylor ensured consistency across the squad.
Worn across two seasons of silverware success and European consolidation, this home shirt represents one of Aston Villa’s strongest mid-1990s eras, defined by trophy success, attacking quality, and a clear identity under Brian Little.
