The 2016 season was a demanding and trophyless campaign for Atlético Mineiro, despite competing strongly across multiple competitions. In the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the team finished 4th with 62 points, securing another top-tier league finish and qualification for continental football. Their final match of the season was impacted by the tragic LaMia Flight 2933 disaster, leading to a cancelled fixture against Chapecoense that was officially recorded as a double walkover.

In cup competitions, Atlético reached the final of the Copa do Brasil but were defeated by Grêmio with a 4–2 aggregate score. In the Copa Libertadores, they advanced to the quarter-finals, narrowly exiting on away goals after a 2–2 aggregate draw with São Paulo. Domestically, they also finished runners-up in the Campeonato Mineiro, losing the final to América Mineiro, while claiming the Florida Cup during pre-season.

Key performers included Robinho, who finished as the club’s top scorer across all competitions with 14 goals, and Juan Cazares, who led the team’s league scoring. The squad was managed by Diego Aguirre before Marcelo Oliveira took over later in the season.
