Description
Away shirt worn by Chelsea F.C. during the 1996–97 and 1997–98 seasons, a defining period in the club’s modern history marked by European success, domestic cup triumphs, and the emergence of a legendary squad built under Ruud Gullit and later Gianluca Vialli.
The shirt features a bold yellow base, sharply contrasted by strong vertical blue stripes that run down from the shoulders to the mid-chest and continue along the sleeves, creating a powerful and distinctive visual identity. The design is completed with a deep blue collar, detailed with yellow and dark blue striping, while a simple yellow neckline provides balance and continuity to the overall look.
The 1996–97 season marked Chelsea’s return to prominence under manager Ruud Gullit. A wave of elite European signings transformed the squad, including Gianluca Vialli, Frank Leboeuf, Roberto Di Matteo, and later Gianfranco Zola, whose arrival in November 1996 immediately elevated the team’s attacking quality.
Chelsea enjoyed a memorable FA Cup campaign in 1996–97, culminating in a 2–0 victory over Middlesbrough in the final, ending a 26-year wait for a major trophy. Di Matteo famously scored after just 42 seconds, sealing a historic Wembley win. However, their league form remained inconsistent, resulting in a 6th-place finish.
The following 1997–98 season brought even greater success but also managerial upheaval. Gullit was dismissed in February 1998, with Vialli taking over as player-manager and guiding the team through a remarkable run-in. Chelsea secured a domestic League Cup triumph, again defeating Middlesbrough in the final thanks to goals from Frank Sinclair and Di Matteo after extra time.
Their crowning achievement came in Europe, as Chelsea won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, defeating VfB Stuttgart in the final in Stockholm. Zola’s instant impact from the bench, scoring within seconds of coming on, sealed European glory. The club also finished 4th in the Premier League, confirming their rise as a consistent top-level force.
Key figures defined this golden spell: Dennis Wise captained the side with aggression and leadership, Ed de Goey provided stability in goal, while Vialli and Zola delivered flair and decisive moments in attack. Roberto Di Matteo’s knack for scoring in major finals further cemented his importance in Chelsea’s trophy-laden resurgence.
This away shirt remains symbolic of Chelsea’s transformation in the late 1990s, a bold design worn during one of the most successful and influential eras in the club’s history.
