Description
Home shirt worn by Chelsea F.C. during the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, a defining golden era in the club’s modern history, marked by European success, domestic cup triumphs, and the emergence of a highly talented multicultural squad under Ruud Gullit and Gianluca Vialli.
The shirt features a rich royal blue base with distinctive white panels on the underside of each sleeve, separated by bold yellow and navy trim. It is finished with a clean white collar and neckline, detailed with yellow and navy striping, giving the kit a sharp late-90s aesthetic that reflects Chelsea’s growing identity as a fearless, attacking side capable of competing across multiple competitions.
The 1997–98 season began under manager Ruud Gullit before a dramatic mid-season transition saw Gianluca Vialli take over as player-manager following Gullit’s departure. That change proved pivotal, as Chelsea’s form in knockout competitions surged dramatically while maintaining a strong league finish of 4th place in the Premier League.
The season’s defining achievements came in cup competitions. Chelsea lifted the League Cup with a 2–0 victory over Middlesbrough F.C. at Wembley, before securing European glory in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup by defeating VfB Stuttgart 1–0 in the final. The decisive moment arrived through a famous late contribution from Gianfranco Zola, who scored just seconds after coming off the bench.
The 1998–99 campaign built on this momentum, as Chelsea evolved into genuine Premier League title contenders. The season opened with the UEFA Super Cup victory over Real Madrid CF, secured by a late goal from Gus Poyet. Vialli’s side then embarked on an impressive 21-match unbeaten league run, briefly topping the table at Christmas.
Despite losing only three league matches all season, Chelsea’s unusually high number of draws meant they finished 3rd in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on the title but securing qualification for the Champions League for the first time in club history.
Key figures of this era included Gianfranco Zola, whose creativity and brilliance defined Chelsea’s attacking identity, alongside defensive leader Marcel Desailly, midfield engine Roberto Di Matteo, captain Dennis Wise, and striker Tore André Flo.
This shirt therefore represents one of the most successful and stylish periods in Chelsea’s pre-Abramovich history, a kit associated with silverware, European nights, and the foundation of the club’s modern identity as a consistent top-level contender.
