The season is defined by Chelsea’s historic run to the 2008 UEFA Champions League Final, played on 21 May 2008 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, the first ever all-English final, against Manchester United F.C.. The match ended 1–1 after extra time, with Cristiano Ronaldo heading United into the lead before Frank Lampard equalised just before half-time following a deflected effort.

The final remained tense through extra time, before turning dramatically when Didier Drogba was sent off in the 116th minute for an incident with Nemanja Vidić, leaving Chelsea to finish the match with ten men.

The penalty shootout that followed became one of the most dramatic in Champions League history. Cristiano Ronaldo missed for Manchester United, giving Chelsea captain John Terry the chance to win the trophy with the final kick of normal order. However, in pouring rain, Terry slipped at the moment of striking the ball, sending his penalty against the post. The shootout ultimately ended 6–5 to Manchester United after Nicolas Anelka’s decisive miss was saved by Edwin van der Sar.

Despite the pain of defeat, Chelsea’s campaign was defined by resilience and elite performances throughout Europe. The squad, featuring key contributions from Michael Essien and others, had battled through difficult ties to reach their first Champions League final in club history.
