Description
Third shirt worn by Chelsea F.C. during the unforgettable 2011–12 season, a campaign that delivered the greatest achievement in the club’s history as the Blues lifted both the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup.
The shirt features a striking white base with a bold yellow horizontal stripe across the centre of the chest, contrasted by a black upper chest and shoulders. White sleeves are paired with a black collar, neckline and cuffs, creating one of the most distinctive and memorable alternate kits worn by Chelsea during the modern era.
Despite finishing only 6th in the Premier League, Chelsea produced one of the most remarkable cup campaigns ever seen in European football. The season began under André Villas-Boas, but inconsistent performances and dressing-room unrest led to his dismissal in March 2012. Club legend Roberto Di Matteo was appointed caretaker manager and immediately revitalised the squad, uniting the experienced core that would go on to make history.
Chelsea's route to Champions League glory was filled with extraordinary comebacks. After losing 3–1 away to S.S.C. Napoli in the Round of 16, they produced a stunning 4–1 victory at Stamford Bridge to progress. In the semi-finals, they faced reigning champions FC Barcelona, overcoming the Spanish giants 3–2 on aggregate, including a legendary performance at Camp Nou where Chelsea held on with ten men before a famous late goal from Fernando Torres sealed qualification.
The final against FC Bayern Munich took place in Bayern's own Allianz Arena. After Thomas Müller gave Bayern a late lead, Chelsea looked destined for defeat before Didier Drogba powered home an iconic 88th-minute header. Following extra time, goalkeeper Petr Čech made crucial saves in the penalty shootout, allowing Drogba to convert the winning penalty and secure Chelsea's first-ever European Cup.
Chelsea also lifted the FA Cup, defeating Liverpool F.C. 2–1 at Wembley to complete a historic cup double.
The season relied on the leadership of the club's legendary core. Frank Lampard finished as the club's top scorer with 16 goals, while Drogba continued to deliver on the biggest stage. New signing Juan Mata enjoyed a superb debut campaign, contributing 12 goals and 15 assists on his way to winning Chelsea's Player of the Year award. Captain John Terryremained the defensive leader throughout the campaign, although suspension ruled him out of the Champions League final itself.
Ultimately, this third shirt is forever associated with one of football's greatest underdog triumphs, a season of resilience, drama and unforgettable moments that saw Chelsea conquer Europe for the very first time.
