Description
Away shirt worn by Chelsea F.C. during the 2012–13 season, a chaotic yet historic campaign in which the Blues competed across an unprecedented number of competitions and ultimately added the UEFA Europa League to their growing European trophy collection.
The shirt features a clean white base with a bold diagonal light blue sash running across the front, giving it a distinctive and modern visual identity. A black collar and black cuffs frame the design, while black stripes running down the sleeves fade smoothly into blue, creating a sharp contrast that reflects the intensity and unpredictability of the season.
The 2012–13 campaign was defined by constant change and drama. Roberto Di Matteo began the season as permanent manager following his Champions League triumph the previous year, but he was dismissed in November 2012 after a poor run of form. He was replaced by Rafael Benítez, whose appointment was widely criticised by supporters but ultimately resulted in European success and stabilisation across multiple competitions.
Chelsea’s season saw them compete in a remarkable eight competitions in total, reflecting their status as both European champions and global competitors. In the Premier League, they finished 3rd with 75 points, securing Champions League qualification. However, cup competitions provided a mixed picture: semi-final exits in both the FA Cup and League Cup, a runners-up finish in the FA Community Shield, and defeat in the UEFA Super Cup against Atlético Madrid.
Internationally, Chelsea endured frustration in the UEFA Champions League group stage, becoming the first reigning champions in history to be eliminated at that stage. However, they dropped into the UEFA Europa League and embarked on a dominant run through the competition. Key victories over teams such as FC Basel and SL Benfica set up a final showdown in Amsterdam.
The Europa League Final against Benfica proved to be one of the most dramatic moments of the season. With the match heading towards extra time, Branislav Ivanović rose in the 93rd minute to head home the winning goal, securing a 2–1 victory and making Chelsea only the fourth club in history, and the first English side, to win all three major UEFA club competitions.
Individually, the season was defined by the attacking brilliance of the “Mazacar” trio: Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, and Oscar. Mata in particular enjoyed a sensational campaign, contributing 18 goals and an extraordinary 34 assists across all competitions. Frank Lampard also made history, surpassing Bobby Tambling to become Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer after scoring twice against Aston Villa in May 2013.
Despite the instability and managerial upheaval, this shirt is forever associated with a landmark season in Chelsea’s history, one defined by resilience, controversy, and ultimate European redemption.
