Description
Home shirt worn by Chelsea F.C. during the 2012–13 season, a chaotic yet historic campaign that saw the club compete across an extraordinary number of competitions while still securing major European silverware under intense managerial upheaval.
The shirt features Chelsea’s traditional royal blue base, elevated by elegant gold detailing running down the sleeves, giving the kit a more prestigious, continental feel. A matching blue neckline maintains the club’s classic identity, while blue cuffs accented with a single gold stripe complete the design. The gold trim reflects a sense of European pedigree, fitting for a season defined by continental competition and redemption.
The 2012–13 season began under Roberto Di Matteo, the man who had famously guided Chelsea to Champions League glory the previous year. However, after an inconsistent start to the campaign, he was dismissed in November 2012. The club then appointed Rafael Benítez as interim manager, an appointment met with heavy fan opposition due to his past with rivals Liverpool.
Despite the unrest, Chelsea navigated one of the most demanding seasons in their modern history, competing in a remarkable eight different competitions. In the Premier League, they finished 3rd with 75 points, securing Champions League qualification for the following season. Domestic cup runs saw them reach the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup, while also finishing runners-up in the FA Community Shield.
In Europe, Chelsea experienced both disappointment and triumph. They suffered a shock exit in the UEFA Champions League group stage, becoming the first reigning champions in history to fail to progress beyond the group phase. However, they dropped into the UEFA Europa League and embarked on a dominant run, defeating sides such as FC Baseland SL Benfica en route to the final.
The Europa League Final in Amsterdam proved decisive. In a tense match against Benfica, Branislav Ivanović scored a dramatic stoppage-time header to secure a 2–1 victory, completing Chelsea’s unique achievement of holding all three major UEFA trophies at different points in their history and becoming one of Europe’s most decorated modern clubs.
Key players defined the season throughout, including the attacking brilliance of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, and Oscar, whose creativity formed the core of Chelsea’s attack. Frank Lampard also made history during the campaign, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer after surpassing Bobby Tambling.
This shirt remains closely associated with a season of contradiction, domestic inconsistency, managerial turmoil, and European success, ultimately ending in one of Chelsea’s most memorable triumphs on the continental stage.
