Description
Third shirt worn by Chelsea F.C. during the 2012–13 season, a chaotic yet historic campaign in which the club competed across an extraordinary number of competitions and ultimately secured UEFA Europa League glory under intense managerial turbulence.
The shirt features a striking black base, defined by two bold yellow diagonal stripes that descend from the shoulders and converge towards the upper chest. Beneath this focal point, a series of smaller yellow accents form four subtle horizontal rows, adding depth and structure to the design. Yellow detailing continues down the sleeves, while a black and yellow neckline and solid black cuffs complete a kit that feels aggressive, modern, and European in style.
The season itself was one of constant change at Stamford Bridge. Roberto Di Matteo began the campaign as permanent manager after delivering Champions League success the previous season, but he was dismissed in November 2012 following a difficult run of form. He was replaced by Rafael Benítez, whose appointment was initially met with heavy supporter backlash due to his previous association with rivals Liverpool.
Despite instability off the pitch, Chelsea navigated a demanding schedule across eight competitions. In the Premier League, they finished 3rd with 75 points to secure Champions League qualification. Domestically, they reached the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup, while also finishing runners-up in the FA Community Shield after facing Manchester City F.C..
Europe brought both frustration and redemption. Chelsea suffered a shock exit from the UEFA Champions League group stage, becoming the first defending champions in history to be eliminated at that stage. However, they dropped into the UEFA Europa League and embarked on an impressive run, defeating sides such as FC Basel and SL Benfica en route to the final.
The Europa League Final in Amsterdam produced one of the defining moments of the season. In a tense and dramatic finish, Branislav Ivanović scored a stoppage-time header to secure a 2–1 victory over Benfica, ensuring Chelsea became one of the few clubs in European football history to win all three major UEFA competitions.
Key attacking influence came from Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, and Oscar, who formed the creative core of the side. Meanwhile, Frank Lampard continued to make history, becoming Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer during the campaign.
This shirt is remembered as part of a uniquely turbulent yet successful season, defined by managerial change, relentless fixture congestion, and ultimately European triumph sealed in the final seconds of a historic night in Amsterdam.
