Description
Second home shirt worn by C.D. Guadalajara during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
The shirt features Chivas’ traditional red and white vertical stripes in a classic and balanced layout, reflecting the club’s strong identity as reigning champions entering the campaign. A simple black neckline adds contrast and definition, giving the shirt a sharper edge while maintaining its clean, traditional appearance. The design stays firmly rooted in Chivas’ historic colour scheme, making it instantly recognisable and timeless.
The 1997/98 season saw C.D. Guadalajara enter the campaign as reigning champions following their Verano 1997 title win under manager Ricardo Ferretti. With expectations high, the club aimed to defend its domestic dominance while also competing in the early stages of continental football through Copa Libertadores qualification.
In the Invierno 1997 tournament, Chivas produced a strong regular-season showing, finishing 2nd in Group 2 with 29 points from 17 matches. This secured qualification for the Liguilla playoffs, although they were ultimately unable to defend their championship, falling short of the final stage in a tournament eventually won by Cruz Azul.
The Verano 1998 campaign proved more inconsistent, with the team struggling to replicate their peak form from the previous year. While performances fluctuated, this period played an important role in shaping the squad structure and tactical direction that would later help the club remain competitive in subsequent tournaments.
On the international stage, Chivas participated in the Copa Libertadores, marking an important step in the growing involvement of Mexican clubs in South American competition. Their participation included early-stage matches against regional opposition such as Zulia FC, providing valuable experience at continental level.
The squad featured several key figures in Mexican football. Defender Claudio Suárez served as the defensive leader, while Joel Sánchez provided strength and reliability in the backline. Midfield stability was anchored by captain Alberto Coyote, who played a crucial role in maintaining structure and discipline.
Although the season did not produce silverware, it remained an important transitional year for Chivas, bridging their championship-winning momentum with the highly competitive campaigns that followed.
This second home shirt is remembered as a clean and traditional design, symbolising a period where Chivas de Guadalajara balanced championship expectations with the demands of domestic and continental football.
