The 1998/99 season saw C.D. Guadalajara emerge as one of the strongest sides in the Mexican Primera División under manager Ricardo Ferretti. Known for his disciplined and structured approach, Ferretti built a competitive all-Mexican squad that combined defensive solidity with sharp attacking transitions.

In the Invierno 1998 tournament, Chivas produced an excellent regular season, finishing 2nd overall with 34 points from 17 matches, equalling one of the club’s best short-tournament league performances. Their Liguilla campaign was equally impressive, as they defeated Pumas UNAM and Atlas to reach the final. However, they were ultimately beaten 2–0 on aggregate by Necaxa in the championship decider.

The Verano 1999 campaign was similarly competitive, but Chivas were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Liguilla by Cruz Azul, ending a strong yet trophyless season. Despite the lack of silverware, the team consistently remained among the top contenders in the league.

The squad featured several iconic Mexican players who defined the era. Defender Claudio Suárez provided leadership and defensive stability, while captain Alberto Coyote anchored the midfield. Creative influence came from Ramón Ramírezand Ramón Morales, with attacking options including Luis García Postigo.
