Description
Home shirt worn by Club América during the 1994 to 1996 seasons.
The shirt features Club América’s traditional yellow base combined with one of the most iconic graphic designs ever seen in Mexican football. Across the upper chest and sleeves sits a bold geometric diamond pattern resembling layered feathers, formed through rows of black, red, and blue detailing that created a vibrant, eagle-inspired visual effect. A yellow neckline with a blue stripe completes the design, giving the shirt a unique and unmistakably mid-1990s identity that remains legendary among football shirt collectors and América supporters alike.
The 1994–1996 era is remembered as one of the most entertaining and visually iconic periods in the history of Club América. Despite failing to win a major trophy, the team became famous for its breathtaking attacking football, international star power, and revolutionary tactical style.
During the 1994/95 season, Dutch manager Leo Beenhakker transformed América into one of the most feared attacking sides in Liga MX. The club signed Cameroonian striker François Omam-Biyik alongside Zambian star Kalusha Bwalya, forming the legendary “Abejas Africanas” partnership. Combined with emerging Mexican talent Cuauhtémoc Blanco, América produced some of the most spectacular football ever seen in the league during the era.
The team dominated much of the regular season and appeared among the favourites for the title before controversy struck late in the campaign. Beenhakker was abruptly dismissed by club president Emilio Díez Barroso despite the club sitting near the top of the table. Reports later suggested the dismissal stemmed from Beenhakker refusing instructions to bench midfielder Joaquín del Olmo during a contractual dispute. Croatian manager Mirko Jozić took over for the playoffs, but América lost momentum and were eliminated in the semi-finals by Cruz Azul.
Individually, Omam-Biyik produced one of the greatest goalscoring seasons in club history, scoring in 11 consecutive matches and finishing the campaign with 33 league goals. His combination with Kalusha became one of the most celebrated attacking duos in Mexican football history.
Ahead of the 1995/96 season, América appointed legendary Argentine tactician Marcelo Bielsa in an attempt to continue evolving the team tactically. The squad was strengthened by signings including Hárold Lozano, Maurizio Gaudino, and Luis García Postigo. However, Bielsa’s demanding methods produced mixed results, and after his departure in 1996, the club struggled to recreate the brilliance of the previous campaign.
Although this era ended without silverware, it remains one of the most beloved periods in Club América history due to the team’s attacking philosophy, unforgettable players, and instantly recognisable adidas kit design. This shirt has since become regarded as one of the greatest and most iconic football shirts ever produced.
