Description
Home shirt worn by Club América during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
The shirt features Club América’s traditional yellow base combined with a large tonal club crest subtly incorporated across the front of the design, creating a bold yet refined late-1990s aesthetic. Black detailing runs down the sleeves, while a black neckline provides sharp contrast against the bright yellow body. The oversized ghosted crest gives the shirt a unique visual identity, making it one of the most recognisable América shirts of the era.
The 1999/00 season was one of the most dramatic and memorable campaigns in the history of Club América, defined by a historic Copa Libertadores run and major managerial changes throughout the year. As Mexican clubs were still relatively new participants in South America’s premier club competition, América established themselves as serious continental contenders with a series of spectacular performances.
Their Libertadores campaign included one of the most iconic matches in club history — an incredible 8–2 victory over Olimpia at the Estadio Azteca during the group stage. América continued their impressive run by defeating América de Cali in the Round of 16 and Bolívar in the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals.
The semi-final against Boca Juniors became legendary. After losing the first leg 4–1 at La Bombonera, América nearly completed an extraordinary comeback by winning 3–1 at the Azteca. The team came within minutes of forcing penalties before a late goal from Walter Samuel ended their hopes and sent Boca through to the final. Despite the elimination, América’s performances earned huge respect across the continent.
Domestically, the season was marked by instability on the bench. Manager Carlos Kiese departed early in the campaign before Roberto Alderete briefly took interim charge. Club legend Alfredo Tena eventually steadied the team after being appointed manager in late 1999, helping América remain competitive in the Liguilla playoffs despite balancing demanding continental fixtures.
The squad featured several iconic players of the era. Cuauhtémoc Blanco was at the peak of his powers, combining creativity, flair, and goalscoring ability to become the focal point of the attack. Goalkeeper Adolfo Ríos provided reliability between the posts, while Pável Pardo and Duilio Davino helped anchor the midfield and defence. South American additions such as Sergio Berti and José Luis Calderón added further attacking quality during the Libertadores run.
This home shirt is remembered as one of the defining Club América designs of the late 1990s, representing a thrilling era of attacking football, continental ambition, and unforgettable nights at the Estadio Azteca.
