Description
Away shirt worn by Cruz Azul during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
The shirt features a clean white base dominated by a large diagonal Cruz Azul crest graphic running across the front, creating one of the club’s boldest and most distinctive late-1990s designs. Subtle Cruz Azul logos are woven throughout the fabric, adding texture and depth to the material while reinforcing the club identity across the entire shirt. Blue cuffs and a matching blue neckline are detailed with red and white striping, completing a design that perfectly captures the vibrant aesthetic of late-1990s football shirts.
During the 1998/99 Mexican Primera División season, Cruz Azul established itself as one of the strongest teams in Mexican football under manager Luis Fernando Tena. Although the club ultimately fell short of winning the championship, they dominated large portions of the regular season and were widely regarded as one of the most complete sides in the league.
In the Invierno 1998 tournament, Cruz Azul produced an outstanding campaign, finishing 1st overall in the general table with 40 points from 17 matches, recording 12 wins, 4 draws, and just 1 defeat. The team also finished with an impressive +27 goal difference, highlighting both their attacking quality and defensive strength. Despite their dominance, the season ended in disappointment when they were eliminated by Pumas UNAM in the Liguilla quarter-finals.
The strong performances continued into Verano 1999, where Cruz Azul once again qualified for the playoffs. They defeated Necaxa in the quarter-finals before eventually being knocked out in the semi-finals by Toluca, who went on to win the championship.
The squad featured several legendary figures from Mexican and international football. Goalkeeper Óscar Pérez remained a commanding presence between the posts, while Peruvian defender Juan Reynoso captained the side and anchored the defence. Midfield veteran Benjamín Galindo provided creativity and experience, contributing important goals throughout the campaign.
The attack was led by Francisco Palencia, who finished as the team’s top scorer with 18 goals across the season. The squad also featured the emerging Mauro Camoranesi, whose breakout performances during this period helped launch the career that would later see him win the 2006 FIFA World Cup with Italy.
This away shirt is remembered as one of Cruz Azul’s most iconic late-1990s designs, representing a period when the club played some of the most dominant football in Mexico while featuring a squad packed with legendary talent.
