Description
Home shirt worn by Cruz Azul during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
The shirt features a bold blue base with a large diagonal Cruz Azul crest graphic stretching across the front, creating one of the club’s most striking and recognisable late-1990s designs. Subtle Cruz Azul logos are woven throughout the fabric, adding texture and depth to the material while reinforcing the club’s identity across the entire shirt. White cuffs and a matching white neckline are accented with red and blue striping, perfectly balancing the club’s traditional colours and completing a classic Liga MX-era look.
During the 1998/99 Mexican Primera División season, Cruz Azul established itself as one of the strongest teams in Mexican football under the management of Luis Fernando Tena. The club dominated much of the regular season and played some of the most effective football in the country, although they ultimately fell short of securing the league championship.
In the Invierno 1998 tournament, Cruz Azul finished 1st overall in the general standings after an exceptional campaign that saw the team collect 40 points from 17 matches, recording 12 wins, 4 draws, and just a single defeat. Their impressive +27 goal difference highlighted the balance and quality throughout the squad. Despite this dominance, the team suffered disappointment in the Liguilla quarter-finals after being eliminated by Pumas UNAM.
The club remained highly competitive during Verano 1999, once again qualifying for the playoffs and defeating Necaxa in the quarter-finals before eventually being knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual champions Toluca.
The squad featured several legendary names associated with Cruz Azul and Mexican football. Goalkeeper Óscar Pérezprovided security and leadership from the back, while Peruvian defender Juan Reynoso captained the side and anchored the defence. Midfield creativity came from veteran playmaker Benjamín Galindo, who contributed important goals and experience throughout the campaign.
Leading the attack was Francisco Palencia, who finished as the team’s top scorer with 18 goals across the season. The squad also included the emerging Mauro Camoranesi, whose standout performances helped launch the career that would later culminate in winning the 2006 FIFA World Cup with Italy.
This home shirt is remembered as one of Cruz Azul’s most iconic late-1990s designs, symbolising a period when the club consistently competed among Mexico’s elite while showcasing a squad filled with talent, leadership, and attacking quality.
