The period from 1987 to 1991 represented a bridge between Flamengo’s legendary early-1980s golden generation and the next wave of domestic success that followed in the early 1990s. Throughout these years, Flamengo remained one of Brazil’s strongest and most popular clubs, regularly competing for major honours at both national and state level.

The era is most famously associated with the controversial 1987 Copa União championship. Flamengo won the Green Module, defeating Internacional in the final of the competition featuring Brazil’s elite clubs. However, an ongoing dispute with the CBF regarding a proposed playoff against Sport Recife led to decades of controversy over the official national title. Despite later legal rulings recognising Sport as the sole 1987 champion, Flamengo supporters continue to celebrate the triumph as one of the club’s most important achievements.

In 1990, Flamengo lifted the Copa do Brasil for the first time in club history, defeating Goiás 1–0 on aggregate in the final following a narrow but disciplined two-legged performance. The club also won the Campeonato Carioca in 1991, led by a mixture of experienced veterans and emerging young talent. Additional regional success came with Taça Guanabara victories in 1988 and 1989, along with the Taça Rio title in 1991.

Several legendary players wore this iconic shirt during the period. Zico remained the symbolic figure of Flamengo during the late stages of his extraordinary career, while Júnior continued to provide leadership and quality across the pitch. The squad also featured stars such as Bebeto, Renato Gaúcho, and the emerging Zinho, who would later become one of Brazil’s standout midfielders of the 1990s.

This shirt is remembered as a classic Flamengo design from an era filled with controversy, transition, and silverware, symbolising the club’s continued status as one of the giants of Brazilian football.
