Description
Third shirt worn by Flamengo during the 2001 season.
The shirt features a bold red base combined with black side panels that run down either side of the body before flowing around the sleeves, creating a distinctive split effect with red at the front of the sleeves and black at the back. A black neckline completes the aggressive early-2000s design, giving the shirt a sharp and modern appearance while remaining faithful to Flamengo’s traditional colours. The flowing panel construction made this one of the club’s most unique alternate shirts of the era.
The 2001 season was one of the most dramatic and unpredictable campaigns in Flamengo’s history, combining major trophy success with a desperate battle against relegation in the national league. Despite severe struggles in the Brasileirão, Flamengo still managed to secure memorable silverware and produce some of the club’s most iconic moments of the early 2000s.
Flamengo won the Campeonato Carioca, completing a historic fourth tricampeonato by claiming three consecutive state titles between 1999 and 2001. The final against Vasco da Gama was decided by one of the most legendary goals in Brazilian football history, as Petković scored an unforgettable late free-kick into the top corner to secure the title in dramatic fashion.
The club also lifted the Copa dos Campeões after defeating São Paulo 7–6 on aggregate in a thrilling high-scoring final, earning qualification for the 2002 Copa Libertadores. Flamengo additionally reached the final of the Copa Mercosur but narrowly lost on penalties to Argentine side San Lorenzo after an intense continental campaign.
In complete contrast to their cup success, Flamengo endured a disastrous Campeonato Brasileiro Série A campaign, finishing 24th and narrowly avoiding relegation. Survival was only secured in the closing weeks of the season, with a crucial victory over Palmeiras featuring an important goal from a young Felipe Melo helping save the club from dropping into Série B.
The squad featured several notable players during the campaign, including Petković, Edílson, and goalkeeper Julio Cesar. The team was managed for much of the year by legendary coach Mário Zagallo before Carlos Alberto Torres took over later in the season.
This third shirt is remembered as one of Flamengo’s most distinctive early-2000s designs, representing a chaotic but unforgettable season filled with dramatic victories, famous goals, and a remarkable escape from relegation.
