The 1992–93 period was a challenging yet memorable time for Fluminense, defined by moments of promise alongside inconsistency. In 1992, the club reached the Copa do Brasil final for the first time, narrowly missing out on the trophy after a 2–1 win in the first leg was overturned by a 1–0 defeat to Internacional, with the title decided on away goals following a late and controversial penalty. In the league, Fluminense finished 14th in the Campeonato Brasileiro and also reached the Round of 16 in the Copa Conmebol.

The following season proved more difficult, with Fluminense struggling in an expanded Campeonato Brasileiro format and finishing 28th overall. Despite this, they remained competitive in other competitions, reaching the Round of 16 of the Copa Conmebol once again. In the Campeonato Carioca, Fluminense reached the final but were defeated by Vasco da Gama in a three-match series, with the title decided after Vasco secured a bonus point for their superior overall campaign.

The squad featured notable talents, including striker Ézio, alongside players such as Nilson, Julinho, and Alessandro.
