Description
Fourth shirt worn by Grêmio during the 1996 season.
The shirt features a vibrant blue base covered with thin horizontal white pinstripes, creating a bold and highly distinctive look that perfectly captures the experimental football kit designs of the mid-1990s. The chest area and left sleeve are finished in black, separated from the blue sections by a large curved white stripe that sweeps diagonally across the shirt, giving the design a dynamic and futuristic appearance. A white collar and matching cuffs, both detailed with blue and black stripes, complete the shirt with a sharp and balanced finish.
The 1996 season was one of the most successful campaigns in Grêmio’s history, as the club continued the dominance established under manager Luiz Felipe Scolari. Following their Copa Libertadores triumph the previous year, Grêmio added major domestic and international silverware to cement their status as one of South America’s elite teams.
Grêmio won the Campeonato Brasileiro, securing their second national league title after defeating Portuguesa in the final. Despite losing the first leg 2–0, the team produced a dramatic comeback victory in the return match at the Estádio Olímpico, claiming the title thanks to their superior regular-season campaign. The club also lifted the Recopa Sudamericana with a commanding 4–1 win over Independiente in Japan and secured the Campeonato Gaúcho title by defeating Juventude in the state final.
The squad featured several legendary figures from this era. Paulo Nunes was the Brasileirão top scorer with 16 goals and became one of the symbols of Grêmio’s aggressive attacking style. Goalkeeper Danrlei remained a crucial presence between the posts, while defenders Mauro Galvão and Adilson Batista provided leadership and defensive stability. The squad also retained the influence of players such as Francisco Arce, whose quality from wide areas was vital throughout the campaign.
This fourth shirt is remembered as one of Grêmio’s most unique designs of the 1990s, combining bold graphics and unconventional colour blocking with one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
