Description
Home shirt worn by Grêmio during the 1998 season.
The shirt features Grêmio’s traditional blue and black vertical stripes, enhanced with thin white pinstripes that add extra depth and definition to the design. A black collar and neckline, finished with a subtle blue stripe, give the shirt a sharp and modern appearance while preserving the club’s iconic identity. The clean combination of classic striping and refined detailing made this one of Grêmio’s most recognisable shirts of the late 1990s.
The 1998 season is most famously remembered as the year Ronaldinho made his professional debut for Grêmio, marking the beginning of one of football’s greatest careers. Although the club ended the year without major silverware, Grêmio remained highly competitive across domestic and continental competitions.
In the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, Grêmio finished 8th in the regular season and qualified for the knockout stages before eventually being eliminated in the quarter-finals. The club also reached the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores, advancing through the group stage and Round of 16 before being knocked out by eventual champions Vasco da Gama with a 2–1 aggregate defeat. In the Copa do Brasil, Grêmio again reached the quarter-finals but were eliminated by São Paulo following a 2–0 defeat at home.
The Campeonato Gaúcho produced an unusual outcome, as neither Grêmio nor rivals Internacional won the state championship, with Juventude instead claiming the title. Despite the lack of trophies, the season remained highly significant due to the emergence of future stars and the continued strength of the squad.
Alongside the young Ronaldinho, the team featured several experienced and influential players. Danrlei remained a key figure in goal and one of the club’s most popular players, while Roger Machado provided consistency at left-back. In defence, Rafael Scheidt established himself as one of the squad’s standout performers before later earning a high-profile move to Europe.
This shirt is remembered not only as a classic late-90s Grêmio design, but also as the jersey worn during the breakthrough year of Ronaldinho, forever linking it to the beginning of a legendary football career.
