Description
Home shirt worn by Ipswich Town during the 1999/01 period, one of the most memorable eras in the club’s modern history under manager George Burley. The shirt was worn as the Tractor Boys secured promotion back to the Premier League in 1999/00 before producing a remarkable fifth place finish in their first season back in the top flight.
The shirt features a classic royal blue base with contrasting white panels running beneath the arms and down the sides. A retro white polo sports collar with blue trim gives the design a distinctive late 1990s appearance, complemented by matching blue detailing and the Greene King sponsor displayed prominently in white across the chest.
In 1999/00, Ipswich finished third in the First Division after narrowly missing out on automatic promotion, before overcoming Bolton Wanderers 7–5 on aggregate in a dramatic playoff semi final. They then defeated Barnsley 4–2 in the final at the original Wembley Stadium, securing promotion and becoming the final club to win a competitive domestic fixture at the famous venue before its redevelopment. David Johnson led the way with 23 goals in all competitions.
Ipswich’s return to the Premier League in 2000/01 was even more remarkable. Written off by many as relegation favourites, Burley’s side defied expectations to finish fifth with 66 points and qualify for the UEFA Cup. They recorded famous victories away at Liverpool and Leeds United and pushed for a Champions League place until the final day. Marcus Stewart scored 21 goals in all competitions, including 19 in the league, while captain Matt Holland, Richard Wright and young defender Titus Bramble were among the key figures in a side that shocked the Premier League. Burley was subsequently named Premier League Manager of the Year.
