The 1994 season is most famously remembered for Italy’s dramatic campaign at the FIFA World Cup in the United States. Coached by Arrigo Sacchi, the Azzurri were a resilient, defensively masterful side, anchored by legends such as Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini. The tournament is particularly associated with Roberto Baggio, the “Divine Ponytail,” who carried the team through the knockout rounds with crucial late goals: a 113th-minute winner against Nigeria in the Round of 16, an 88th-minute winner against Spain in the quarter-finals, and both goals in a 2–1 semi-final win over Bulgaria.

The campaign ended in heartbreak at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, where Italy faced Brazil in the final. After a 0–0 draw, the match went to a penalty shootout, and the team’s heroes, Baresi and Baggio, missed their spot-kicks, handing Brazil the trophy. Despite the disappointment, Paolo Maldini’s performances cemented his status as one of the world’s premier defenders.
