Description
Home shirt worn by Leeds United F.C. between 1976 and 1981, a significant transitional period that saw the club move away from the dominance of the Don Revie years and begin a lengthy rebuilding process following the departure of many of its legendary players.
The shirt features a classic white base with a blue collar, neckline and cuffs accented by yellow stripes. Yellow and blue detailing runs along the tops of the sleeves, creating a distinctive look that remains one of the most recognisable Leeds United designs of the late 1970s.
Following the end of the club's golden era, manager Jimmy Armfield was tasked with rebuilding an aging squad while maintaining Leeds' status in the First Division. Despite limited resources and the gradual departure of key figures from the Revie era, Armfield guided the club to respectable league finishes and notable cup runs. Leeds reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1977 and the League Cup semi-finals in 1978, with players such as Joe Jordan and Ray Hankin providing important goals.
A major moment arrived in 1978 when legendary Celtic manager Jock Stein was appointed. His tenure lasted only 44 days before he departed to take charge of the Scotland national team, leaving Leeds searching for stability once again.
The club subsequently turned to Jimmy Adamson, who oversaw a brief revival during the 1978–79 campaign. Leeds climbed to 5th place in Division One, their highest finish since the decline from the Revie years began, and secured qualification for the UEFA Cup. Key contributors during this period included Tony Currie, Brian Flynn, John Hawley and long-serving defender Trevor Cherry.
However, the momentum proved short-lived. The sale of influential players and a growing lack of attacking quality saw Leeds slide back towards mid-table. Goals became increasingly difficult to find, and by 1980 the club was struggling near the bottom of the division. Adamson eventually departed and former Leeds hero Allan Clarke returned as manager in an attempt to restore stability.
Despite improving results and steering the club away from immediate danger, Clarke inherited a side lacking the firepower that had once defined Leeds United. Players such as Carl Harris, Terry Connor and Kevin Hird struggled to consistently replace the goals and influence of earlier generations, and the foundations for the club's eventual relegation in 1982 were already becoming evident.
Worn during five seasons of rebuilding, managerial upheaval and gradual decline, this home shirt represents the final chapter of Leeds United's post-Revie transition. Associated with figures such as Billy Bremner, Joe Jordan, Trevor Cherry and Tony Currie, it remains an iconic design from a fascinating period in the club's history.
