Description
Away shirt worn by Leeds United F.C. during the 2000–01 and 2001–02 seasons, a dramatic period defined by the rise and collapse of David O’Leary’s ambitious “Leeds Babies” project, as the club moved from Champions League semi-finalists to a side under increasing financial and competitive strain.
The shirt features a bright yellow base with distinctive vertical navy pinstripes running down the left and right sides of the front, paired with a yellow collar. A navy neckline and cuffs with white stripe detailing complete the design, giving it a bold yet balanced look that stood out strongly among early-2000s Premier League kits.
The 2000–01 season marked the peak of Leeds’ modern resurgence. O’Leary’s youthful squad produced a sensational UEFA Champions League run, defeating elite European sides such as AC Milan, FC Barcelona and Deportivo La Coruñaon their way to the semi-finals, before eventually being eliminated by Valencia CF. In attack, Mark Viduka led the line brilliantly, scoring 22 goals across all competitions, while young talents such as Alan Smith and Harry Kewell played key supporting roles.
Domestically, Leeds finished 4th in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on automatic Champions League qualification for the following season. Despite their European heroics, the physical and financial demands of competing on multiple fronts began to take their toll.
The 2001–02 campaign started with renewed optimism, as Leeds briefly sat top of the Premier League on New Year’s Day. However, the season quickly unravelled following a shock FA Cup defeat to Cardiff City, triggering a severe collapse in form. Heavy investment in new signings such as Robbie Fowler and Seth Johnson failed to stabilise performances, as injuries, inconsistency, and off-field pressures mounted.
The squad was further destabilised by the high-profile trial involving Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate, while key figures such as Rio Ferdinand, Olivier Dacourt and Mark Viduka struggled to maintain early-season momentum.
Ultimately, Leeds finished 5th in the Premier League but missed out on Champions League qualification, a failure that placed enormous financial pressure on the club due to the heavy borrowing that had funded the squad’s rapid rise. Manager David O’Leary departed at the end of the season, marking the end of the club’s most ambitious modern era.
This away shirt is therefore associated with both the height of Leeds United’s European adventure and the beginning of their financial and sporting decline, a striking symbol of a team that briefly challenged the very best in Europe before the project unraveled.
