Description
Home shirt worn by Liverpool F.C. during the 1977–78 season, a campaign that saw the Reds successfully defend the European Cup and become the first British club to retain Europe's most prestigious trophy.
The shirt features a classic all-red base with a simple white neckline, creating one of the most timeless and recognisable designs in Liverpool's history. Its clean, minimalist appearance perfectly reflected the confidence and quality of Bob Paisley's legendary side during one of the club's greatest eras.
Having conquered Europe for the first time in 1977, Liverpool returned to the competition determined to prove their dominance was no fluke. Under the guidance of Bob Paisley, the Reds once again navigated their way through Europe's elite to reach a second consecutive European Cup Final.
The final took place on 10 May 1978 at Wembley Stadium in front of over 92,000 spectators, where Liverpool faced Belgian champions Club Brugge KV. Brugge's disciplined defensive approach frustrated Liverpool throughout the first half, keeping the game scoreless and tense. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 65th minute when Graeme Sounessdelivered a perfectly weighted pass through the defence for Kenny Dalglish. The Scottish forward calmly chipped goalkeeper Birger Jensen to score the only goal of the match and secure a famous 1–0 victory.
Dalglish's winning goal capped a remarkable debut season after arriving from Celtic F.C. as the replacement for Kevin Keegan. His immediate impact helped Liverpool maintain their place at the summit of European football and provided one of the defining moments of his illustrious Anfield career.
The side was packed with legendary names, including Ray Clemence, Phil Neal, Phil Thompson, Jimmy Case, Terry McDermott and Souness, forming the backbone of a team that would become one of the most successful in European football history.
This shirt remains synonymous with Liverpool's second European Cup triumph, representing the night at Wembley when the Reds made history by becoming the first British club to successfully defend the European Cup.
