Description

Away shirt worn by Liverpool F.C. during the 1988–89 season, one of the most emotionally significant and dramatic campaigns in English football history under manager Kenny Dalglish.

The shirt features a distinctive grey base, giving it a rare and understated alternative look compared to Liverpool’s traditional all-red identity. It is finished with a bold red neckline and matching red detailing running down the sleeves, creating a clean but striking contrast that defined late-1980s away kit design.

The 1988–89 season is remembered as a year of extraordinary highs and devastating lows for the club. On the pitch, Liverpool competed fiercely across all domestic competitions, winning the FA Charity Shield at the start of the season and later lifting the FA Cup after a dramatic 3–2 extra-time victory over local rivals Everton F.C. at Wembley.

However, the season was overshadowed by the tragic Hillsborough disaster on 15 April 1989, where 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives. The aftermath profoundly affected the club and its players, with fixtures postponed and the team continuing the campaign under immense emotional strain and national mourning.

In the First Division, Liverpool endured one of the most dramatic title finishes in football history. Finishing level on points and goal difference with Arsenal F.C., they ultimately lost the championship on total goals scored after a heartbreaking 2–0 defeat in the rescheduled final match at Anfield, decided by a last-minute goal from Michael Thomas.

Despite the anguish, the squad remained one of the strongest in Europe, led by key figures such as John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley, John Barnes, Ian Rush, and captain Steve Nicol.

This away shirt is forever linked to one of Liverpool’s most unforgettable seasons, defined by emotional resilience, domestic success, and one of the most dramatic and painful conclusions to a league campaign in English football history.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
