Description
Third shirt worn by Liverpool F.C. during the 1988–89 season, one of the most emotionally significant and historically dramatic campaigns in English football, managed by Kenny Dalglish.
The shirt features a clean white base, offering a rare contrast to Liverpool’s traditional all-red identity. It is finished with a distinctive red and grey neckline, along with matching red and grey detailing running down the sleeves. The combination gives the kit a sharp, understated look that stood out within the club’s late-1980s range of designs.
The 1988–89 season is forever associated with both triumph and tragedy. Liverpool competed across all domestic competitions, beginning the campaign by winning the FA Charity Shield before going on to lift the FA Cup in a dramatic 3–2 extra-time victory over local rivals Everton F.C. at Wembley Stadium. It was a fiercely contested Merseyside final that added another historic chapter to the rivalry.
However, the season was deeply overshadowed by the Hillsborough disaster on 15 April 1989, where 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives. The tragedy profoundly impacted the club, its players, and the wider football community, with the team continuing the season under extraordinary emotional circumstances and a heavily disrupted fixture schedule.
In the First Division, Liverpool endured one of the most dramatic title finishes in football history. They finished level on points and goal difference with Arsenal F.C. but lost the championship on total goals scored after a heartbreaking 2–0 defeat in the rescheduled final match at Anfield, decided by a last-minute goal from Michael Thomas.
The squad featured a legendary core including John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley, John Barnes, Ian Rush, and captain Steve Nicol, who all played pivotal roles throughout a season defined by both excellence and heartbreak.
This third shirt remains closely associated with one of Liverpool’s most unforgettable campaigns, symbolising a year of resilience, emotion, and one of the most dramatic conclusions to a league season in football history.
