Description
Home shirt worn by Liverpool F.C. during the 1996–97 and 1997–98 seasons under manager Roy Evans, a dramatic and defining era often associated with the peak of the “Spice Boys” generation and the emergence of a teenage Michael Owenas one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
The shirt features a classic red base with a traditional white collar and matching white cuffs, both detailed with a subtle red stripe for contrast. Its clean, timeless design reflects Liverpool’s traditional identity while becoming strongly associated with an exciting but ultimately inconsistent period of attacking football.
The 1996–97 season saw Liverpool mount a serious Premier League title challenge, spending long spells at the top of the table and playing some of the most entertaining football in the country. However, defensive fragility and costly late-season dropped points saw them fade from contention, eventually finishing 4th on 68 points. Despite the league disappointment, they enjoyed a strong European campaign, reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain F.C..
The following 1997–98 campaign followed a similar pattern of promise and frustration. Liverpool again challenged near the top but suffered a damaging mid-season slump that ended their title hopes. The season is most famously remembered for the breakthrough of Michael Owen, who stepped into the spotlight after injury to Robbie Fowler and went on to score 23 goals in all competitions, winning the Premier League Golden Boot and establishing himself as a superstar at just 18 years old.
Midfield leadership came from experienced figures such as Steve McManaman and the arrival of Paul Ince added steel and experience, but the side still struggled for consistency. Liverpool eventually finished 3rd in the league and reached the League Cup semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Middlesbrough F.C..
Although no major trophies were won during this two-year spell, the period is remembered for its thrilling attacking football, near-misses in the title race, and the arrival of Michael Owen as the club’s next generational star. This shirt remains closely linked to that transitional era of excitement, inconsistency, and unforgettable forward talent.
