Description
Home shirt worn by Liverpool F.C. during the club’s 2005–06 UEFA Champions League campaign as defending European champions.
The shirt features a classic red base accented by striking gold detailing running from the tops of the shoulders and down the inside of the sleeves. The gold trim was a fitting tribute to Liverpool’s status as reigning champions of Europe following the unforgettable triumph in Istanbul, giving the shirt a prestigious and distinctive appearance on the continental stage.
Liverpool's defence of the European Cup was unique from the outset. Despite winning the competition in 2005, the club had finished fifth in the Premier League and initially failed to qualify for the following season’s tournament. UEFA granted a special exemption that allowed the holders to defend their title, forcing Liverpool to begin in the First Qualifying Round rather than entering directly into the group stage.
Under manager Rafael Benítez, Liverpool successfully navigated qualifying ties against The New Saints F.C., FBK Kaunas and PFC CSKA Sofia to reach the tournament proper.
Drawn into a group containing Chelsea F.C., R.S.C. Anderlecht and Real Betis Balompié, Liverpool topped the group unbeaten. Their defensive organisation was particularly impressive, with five clean sheets in six matches helping secure first place and progression to the knockout rounds.
The European journey came to an unexpected end in the Round of 16 against S.L. Benfica. Liverpool struggled to convert possession into goals and were eliminated 3–0 on aggregate after losing 1–0 in Lisbon and 2–0 at Anfield. It marked a disappointing conclusion to their title defence despite another disciplined and competitive campaign.
Key figures throughout the run included captain Steven Gerrard, defensive leader Jamie Carragher, midfield playmaker Xabi Alonso and goalkeeper Pepe Reina, all of whom played vital roles in maintaining Liverpool’s reputation as one of Europe’s strongest sides.
This European home shirt remains a symbol of Liverpool’s reign as champions of Europe, representing a unique title defence that began in the qualifying rounds and showcased the resilience, organisation, and continental pedigree of Rafael Benítez’s side.
