Description
Home shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 1980–81 season, most famously in the historic 100th FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Although Manchester City ultimately fell just short of lifting the trophy, the campaign produced one of the most memorable FA Cup finals ever played and remains a cherished chapter in the club's history.
The shirt features City's traditional sky-blue base, complemented by a smart white collar, white neckline, and matching white cuffs. White detailing running along the tops of the sleeves adds a clean contrast to the design, creating a timeless look that has become synonymous with one of the club's most iconic Wembley appearances.
Managed by John Bond, Manchester City enjoyed a strong cup run that culminated in an appearance in the 100th FA Cup Final against Tottenham Hotspur F.C.. The original final, played on 9 May 1981 before a crowd of 100,000 spectators, ended 1–1 after extra time. City captain Tommy Hutchison scored a superb diving header to put City ahead before later suffering the misfortune of diverting a Tottenham free-kick into his own net, forcing a replay.
The replay, staged at Wembley five days later, became one of the most famous matches in English football history. After Tottenham took an early lead through Ricky Villa, City responded with a spectacular strike from Steve MacKenzie, whose thunderous volley remains one of the greatest goals ever scored in an FA Cup Final. City then moved ahead through a penalty from Kevin Reeves and appeared on course for victory before goals from Garth Crooks and Ricky Villa turned the game around.
Villa's famous slaloming winner secured a 3–2 victory for Tottenham and later became known as the "Wembley Goal of the Century". Despite the defeat, Manchester City's contribution to one of the competition's greatest finals ensured the team would be remembered long after the final whistle.
Key figures throughout the campaign included goalkeeper Joe Corrigan, captain Tommy Hutchison, winger Dave Bennett, midfielder Steve MacKenzie, and striker Kevin Reeves, all of whom played pivotal roles in City's memorable run to Wembley.
This shirt is forever associated with the 100th FA Cup Final and one of the most dramatic occasions in the history of English football, making it one of Manchester City's most iconic kits.
