Description
Home shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 1989–90 and 1990–91 seasons, a transformative period that saw the club establish itself back among England’s elite following promotion to the First Division.
The shirt features Manchester City’s traditional sky-blue base, enhanced by a subtle darker blue triangular geometric pattern woven throughout the fabric. A striking black collar with white and sky-blue stripe detailing provides a bold contrast, creating one of the most distinctive and memorable designs of the era. Combining classic club colours with late-1980s styling, the shirt remains an iconic favourite among City supporters.
The 1989–90 season was focused on consolidation after promotion from the Second Division. City began the campaign in spectacular fashion, recording one of the most famous victories in club history when they demolished rivals Manchester United F.C. 5–1 at Maine Road. Goals from players including David Oldfield, Trevor Morley, Ian Bishop and Andy Hinchcliffe secured a result that remains one of the most celebrated Manchester derbies ever played.
Despite that memorable triumph, inconsistency led to the departure of manager Mel Machin during the season. His replacement, Howard Kendall, stabilised the team through key additions such as Colin Hendry and Niall Quinn. An impressive unbeaten run late in the campaign secured a comfortable 14th-place finish and ensured City’s survival in the top flight. It was also during this period that "Blue Moon" became firmly established as the club’s anthem on the Kippax terrace.
The 1990–91 season marked a significant step forward. After Kendall’s surprise return to Everton in November 1990, midfielder Peter Reid stepped up as player-manager and successfully maintained the club’s momentum. Under Reid’s leadership, City developed into one of the division’s most competitive sides, combining determination with exciting attacking football.
Leading the charge was Niall Quinn, who enjoyed the finest goalscoring season of his City career with 21 goals in all competitions. Alongside the pace and creativity of David White, City consistently troubled opposition defences and recorded several memorable results, including a thrilling 3–3 draw against Manchester United.
The campaign culminated in an outstanding 5th-place finish in the First Division, the club’s highest top-flight position for many years. Remarkably, City finished above Manchester United in the final table, underlining their emergence as a genuine force in English football once again.
This shirt represents the beginning of a new era at Maine Road, one that saw Manchester City move from newly promoted survivors to top-five contenders, powered by passionate support, memorable derby victories, and a squad that restored pride and optimism throughout the blue half of Manchester.
