Description
Away shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 1990–91 and 1991–92 seasons, a consistent and competitive period in the club’s history as they established themselves as a top-five side in the old First Division under manager Peter Reid.
The shirt features a rich maroon base, brought to life with a subtle darker maroon triangular geometric pattern across the fabric, giving it a distinctive early-90s visual identity. A maroon collar finished with white and sky-blue detailing adds contrast and links the design back to the club’s traditional colours, while the sleeves are accented with white and blue tipping, completing a bold yet balanced away aesthetic.
The 1990–91 season began under Howard Kendall, but a sudden managerial departure in November saw Peter Reid take over as player-manager. Reid quickly stabilised the squad and guided City to an impressive 5th-place finish with 62 points, continuing their resurgence in English football. Striker Niall Quinn led the line brilliantly, scoring 21 goals in all competitions, while goalkeeper Tony Coton was a standout performer throughout the campaign. Despite the heartbreak of Paul Lake’s serious injury, City maintained strong form and even finished above rivals Manchester United F.C. in the league table.
The 1991–92 season saw Peter Reid take charge for his first full campaign, further strengthening the squad with key additions such as defender Keith Curle for a club-record fee. City once again finished 5th in the First Division, this time improving their points tally to 70 and confirming their status as one of England’s most competitive sides in the final season before the creation of the Premier League.
Forward David White enjoyed a standout year, finishing as top scorer with 22 goals in all competitions, while the team also produced memorable performances such as a dominant 4–0 victory over eventual champions Leeds United. Although cup runs were shorter, City’s league consistency remained their defining strength during this era.
This maroon away shirt therefore represents one of Manchester City’s most stable and successful pre-Premier League periods, symbolising a team built on resilience, emerging talent, and a growing belief that they could consistently compete at the top end of English football.
