Description
Away shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 1994–95 and 1995–96 seasons, a turbulent and emotional period that ultimately ended in relegation from the FA Premier League, despite moments of brilliance from cult heroes such as Georgi Kinkladze.
The shirt features a bold and unconventional design, built on a black and red vertically striped base that gives it one of the most striking looks of Manchester City’s mid-1990s kits. A strong black horizontal stripe runs across the chest, while two grey panels extend upward from this band to the tops of the shoulders, clearly separating the body from the sleeves in a sharp, modern geometric layout. The design is completed with a distinctive collar featuring black, red, and white striping, alongside a red-and-white trimmed neckline that reinforces the shirt’s aggressive visual identity.
The 1994–95 season was one of fragile progress. Under manager Brian Horton, City managed to improve their attacking output, scoring 53 league goals and finishing 17th with 49 points, narrowly avoiding relegation. Striker Uwe Rösler was the standout performer, scoring 22 goals in all competitions, forming a strong partnership with Paul Walsh, who also contributed important goals throughout the campaign. However, inconsistency and defensive weaknesses prevented any sustained climb up the table, and Horton was dismissed at the end of the season.
The 1995–96 campaign proved far more dramatic and ultimately heartbreaking. Newly appointed manager Alan Balloversaw a disastrous start, with City taking just two points from their opening 11 matches. Despite this, the arrival of Georgi Kinkladze provided a rare spark of inspiration. His dazzling dribbling, creativity, and spectacular solo goals quickly made him a fan favourite and earned him the club’s Player of the Year award, even in a relegation season.
City’s fate was ultimately sealed on a dramatic final day against Liverpool at Maine Road. Believing they had done enough to survive, players were misinformed from the touchline and attempted to run down the clock in the closing minutes, only to discover after the final whistle that they had been relegated on goal difference. The season ended with City finishing 18th with 38 points, marking one of the most painful conclusions in the club’s modern history.
This away shirt therefore represents a defining and emotional chapter in Manchester City’s history, a visually bold design forever tied to relegation heartbreak, individual brilliance from Kinkladze, and a club on the edge of major rebuilding.
