Description
Home shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, a kit forever associated with the club’s dramatic fall into the third tier and its unforgettable, last-minute Wembley revival that defined the start of City’s modern resurgence.
The design is built on a classic light blue base, featuring a light blue collar and cuffs finished with a refined white and navy stripe detail. A maroon neckline with navy and white striping adds a bold contrast at the top of the shirt, while the sleeves carry further navy, white, and maroon detailing along the upper sections, giving the kit a layered, late-90s aesthetic that reflects the turbulent identity of the era.
The 1997–98 season marked the lowest point in Manchester City’s history up to that stage. After a poor run of form, manager Frank Clark was dismissed in February 1998, with club legend Joe Royle brought in as a last attempt to save the season. However, despite late efforts, City were relegated to Division Two for the first time ever, with the infamous QPR match featuring Jamie Pollock’s accidental own goal proving decisive.
The following 1998–99 campaign began in the depths of the third tier, where results and attendances initially reflected a club in crisis. Heavy defeats and low morale saw City slump as low as mid-table, with even defeats to sides like York City highlighting how far the club had fallen. However, Royle rebuilt the side around resilience and leadership, with key additions such as captain Andy Morrison transforming the dressing room, while players like Shaun Goater became central to the attack.
City finished 3rd in Division Two, earning a place in the play-offs, where they defeated Wigan Athletic over two legs to reach Wembley. In the final against Gillingham, they produced one of football’s most iconic comebacks, scoring twice in stoppage time through Kevin Horlock and Paul Dickov before winning on penalties thanks to heroics from goalkeeper Nicky Weaver.
This shirt is therefore remembered as more than just a design from the late 1990s, it represents the full emotional arc of Manchester City’s collapse and resurrection, from lowest ebb to the beginning of a new era.
