Description
Away shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 1998–99 season, one of the most important campaigns in the club’s modern history, as City secured promotion from the Football League Second Division via a dramatic Wembley play-off final that is still regarded as a defining turning point in their rise back to the top of English football.
The shirt features a bold luminous yellow base with striking black vertical stripes, giving it a high-visibility, aggressive aesthetic that reflected the intensity of the era. Subtle blue pinstripes run through the design, adding texture and depth to the otherwise bold striping. The collar is finished in a distinctive black, luminous yellow and blue striped pattern, while the cuffs mirror this same multi-tone detailing for a cohesive finish. The neckline continues the theme in luminous yellow and black striping, reinforcing the kit’s standout, energetic design.
The 1998–99 season marked a dramatic resurgence for Manchester City following consecutive relegations that had taken the club into the third tier of English football for the first time in their history. Under manager Joe Royle, the team initially struggled for consistency, but gradually built momentum as the campaign progressed.
A key moment in the season came with the arrival of captain Andy Morrison, whose leadership transformed the squad’s mentality and defensive resilience. Up front, Shaun Goater led the line with consistency and power, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 21 goals across all competitions. Behind them, goalkeeper Nicky Weaver became an ever-present figure, making 55 appearances and later etching his name into club folklore.
City finished the regular season in 3rd place with 82 points, earning a place in the play-offs after a strong late-season surge in form. After overcoming Wigan Athletic in a tense semi-final, they advanced to Wembley to face Gillingham in one of the most unforgettable matches in English football history.
The final itself became legendary. Trailing 2–0 with just minutes remaining, City staged an extraordinary comeback. Kevin Horlock struck in the 89th minute before Paul Dickov scored a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time to send the match to penalties. Weaver then produced a heroic shootout performance, saving two penalties as City triumphed 3–1 on penalties.
This luminous yellow and black away shirt, with its blue pinstriped detailing, is forever associated with that night at Wembley, a symbol of survival, resilience, and the moment Manchester City’s modern revival truly began.
