Description
Home shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 1999–2000 and 2000–01 seasons, a kit associated with one of the most dramatic “yo-yo” periods in the club’s modern history, featuring an instant return to the Premier League followed by an immediate relegation, all under the stewardship of Joe Royle at Maine Road.
The shirt is built on a classic light blue base, representing Manchester City’s traditional identity, but is modernised with a bold navy triangular panel positioned in the bottom right corner of the front. The design gives the kit a sharp, asymmetrical edge that stands out against the clean body of the shirt. It is completed with a navy collar and matching navy neckline, while the cuffs also come in navy and are finished with crisp white stripe detailing. A single white stripe runs down the tops of both sleeves, adding balance and continuity to the overall design.
The 1999–2000 season saw City continue their rapid rise from the third tier, having only just secured promotion via the unforgettable Wembley play-off final the year before. Under manager Joe Royle, the side quickly adapted to First Division football, with a powerful attacking partnership between Shaun Goater and Paul Dickov proving decisive. Goater’s prolific scoring form helped drive City to 2nd place with 89 points, securing automatic promotion to the Premier League.
The 2000–01 campaign, however, proved far more difficult. City strengthened heavily with high-profile signings including Paulo Wanchope, George Weah, Richard Dunne, and Alf-Inge Haaland, but the squad struggled to adapt to Premier League intensity. A mid-season collapse, including heavy defeats such as a 5–0 loss to Arsenal, left City short on points, and despite flashes of promise, they finished 18th and were relegated back to the First Division.
Joe Royle was dismissed shortly after relegation was confirmed, bringing an end to a hugely significant chapter. His departure paved the way for the appointment of Kevin Keegan, signalling the start of a new era at the club. This shirt therefore represents both the peak of City’s lower-league resurgence and the harsh reality of life in the top flight during one of their most volatile eras.
