Description
Home shirt worn by Manchester City F.C. during the 2002–03 season, a landmark campaign that combined sporting achievement with deep emotional significance as the club secured a 9th-place Premier League finish while bidding farewell to Maine Road after 80 years at the historic ground.
The shirt is based on a classic light blue foundation, representing the club’s traditional identity, but is enhanced with modern navy detailing throughout. A navy trim runs cleanly along the bottom of the shirt, while a bold navy stripe sits across the tops of the sleeves, intersected by a perpendicular navy and white stripe for a distinctive geometric accent. The design is completed with a navy collar featuring a white stripe, alongside a matching navy neckline and navy cuffs, giving the kit a sharp and structured finish.
The 2002–03 season was managed by Kevin Keegan, who guided City through a memorable final year at Maine Road. While results were inconsistent at times, the team produced several standout moments, most notably a 3–1 derby victory over Manchester United thanks to a brace from Shaun Goater, a result that became one of the defining memories of the stadium’s final chapter.
In the league, City finished 9th in the Premier League, comfortably consolidating their top-flight status. The season also saw strong contributions from Nicolas Anelka, who led the scoring charts, while French defender Sylvain Distin earned the club’s Player of the Season award for his consistency at the back. Homegrown talent Shaun Wright-Phillips also enjoyed a breakout year, winning Young Player of the Season.
The campaign concluded with City qualifying for the 2003–04 UEFA Cup via the UEFA Fair Play ranking, adding an unexpected European qualification to a season already filled with milestones. However, it was also overshadowed by tragedy, as midfielder Marc-Vivien Foé collapsed and died while representing Cameroon at the Confederations Cup in June 2003. In his honour, Manchester City retired the number 23 shirt permanently.
The final home match at Maine Road came on 11 May 2003 against Southampton, marking the emotional end of an era before the club’s move to the City of Manchester Stadium. This shirt therefore represents both celebration and farewell, a symbol of transition, memory, and modernisation in Manchester City’s history.
