Description

Away shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the late 1970s (1975–1980), a transitional era defined by rebuilding, cup drama, and the shift from Tommy Docherty’s explosive attacking side to the more structured, disciplined approach of Dave Sexton.

The shirt features a clean white base with three bold vertical black stripes running down the left-hand side of the front panel, creating a distinctive asymmetrical design. It has a white collar and matching white cuffs, both detailed with three black stripes and finished with a subtle red trim, giving the kit a classic late-70s aesthetic that stood out against more traditional plain designs of the era.

This period followed United’s return to the First Division in 1975 after their Second Division title win, with the club immediately re-establishing themselves as a competitive force. Under Docherty, United played fast, fearless football and quickly became cup contenders, reaching the FA Cup Final in 1976 before famously winning the trophy in 1977 with a 2–1 victory over Liverpool F.C. at Wembley. That triumph remains one of the defining moments of the decade, denying Liverpool a historic treble in the process.

After Docherty’s departure, Dave Sexton took over and gradually reshaped the team into a more cautious and tactical unit. The late 1970s saw United become more defensively organised, culminating in a strong 1979–80 season where they finished runners-up in the First Division, narrowly missing out on the title after a tight race with Liverpool.

Key players of this era included wingers Steve Coppell and Gordon Hill, whose pace and creativity defined United’s wide play, alongside attackers Stuart Pearson, Lou Macari, and later Joe Jordan, who brought physical presence and goals. Club captain Martin Buchan and midfielder Sammy McIlroy provided leadership and consistency through both managerial eras.

This shirt is associated with a pivotal chapter in Manchester United’s history, representing a side caught between eras: evolving tactics, changing leadership, and a blend of cup success and near-miss league campaigns that helped shape the modern identity of the club.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
