Description

Away shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1983 FA Charity Shield, the traditional season curtain-raiser played at Wembley Stadium between the FA Cup holders and First Division champions. Managed by Ron Atkinson, United entered the match looking to build on their trophy-winning momentum from the previous season.

The shirt features a white base with fine grey vertical pinstripes, creating a subtle textured finish compared to the club’s more traditional red home kits. It has a black neckline and matching black cuffs, both detailed with red and white striping, while black detailing runs cleanly down the sleeves to complete a sharp and distinctive early-1980s design.

The 1983 FA Charity Shield was played on Saturday 20 August 1983 in front of 92,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium, with Manchester United facing Liverpool F.C.. It was also the first competitive match in charge of Liverpool for new manager Joe Fagan, following the retirement of Bob Paisley, adding extra significance to the occasion.

United delivered a commanding performance to win 2–0, with captain Bryan Robson scoring both goals. His first came in the 23rd minute after intelligent build-up play involving Frank Stapleton and Ray Wilkins, as Robson calmly finished past Bruce Grobbelaar. The second arrived in the 60th minute, when Robson reacted quickest in the box after sustained pressure from a set-piece situation to bundle home the rebound and seal the victory.

The match highlighted Robson’s leadership and influence, while also showcasing the growing importance of Norman Whiteside, who played a key role in creating attacking pressure throughout the game. This victory secured Manchester United’s first Charity Shield win since 1957 and set the tone for another successful campaign under Atkinson.

This shirt remains associated with a dominant Wembley performance, a captain’s masterclass from Bryan Robson, and the continuation of Manchester United’s resurgence in the early 1980s.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
