Description

Away shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. in the 1983 Milk Cup Final, one of the most memorable domestic cup finals of the early 1980s. Under manager Ron Atkinson, United were enjoying a highly successful season and arrived at Wembley aiming to secure the first piece of silverware of the campaign.

The shirt features a white base with a black neckline and matching black cuffs, both accented by red and white stripes. Black detailing runs down the sleeves, creating a striking contrast that made this one of Manchester United’s most distinctive away kits of the era.

The 1983 Milk Cup Final saw Manchester United face fierce rivals Liverpool F.C. at Wembley Stadium on 26 March 1983. United made the perfect start when 17-year-old Norman Whiteside controlled a pass from Gordon McQueen, turned past Alan Hansen and calmly finished to give his side the lead. The goal made Whiteside the youngest player ever to score in a domestic cup final at Wembley, cementing his status as one of the brightest young talents in English football.

United held their advantage for over an hour before Liverpool equalised through Alan Kennedy in the 75th minute. With the scores level, the match headed into extra time, where Ronnie Whelan produced a stunning curling strike in the 98th minute to secure a 2–1 victory for Liverpool.

Despite the disappointment, the final remains an important chapter in Manchester United’s 1982–83 season. Victory would have kept alive the possibility of becoming the first English club to win both the League Cup and FA Cup in the same campaign. Although they fell short at Wembley in March, Atkinson’s side would gain redemption just two months later by lifting the FA Cup, ensuring the season would still be remembered as one of the club’s most successful of the decade.

Today, this shirt remains closely associated with the emergence of Norman Whiteside, one of Wembley’s most iconic cup-final goals, and a Manchester United side that helped restore the club’s place among England’s elite.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
