Description
Away shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1986–87 and 1987–88 seasons, a formative period marking the arrival and early evolution of manager Alex Ferguson. These two seasons represent the beginning of a major cultural and tactical rebuild at Old Trafford, as Ferguson transformed a struggling squad into a side capable of challenging for the league title.
The shirt features a clean white base, contrasted by a red neckline and matching red cuffs, both detailed with white and black striping. Red and black detailing runs down the sleeves, giving the kit a bold yet balanced aesthetic that reflects the club’s transition from instability to growing structure and discipline under Ferguson’s early leadership.
The 1986–87 season began in crisis, with United battling near the relegation zone before Ferguson replaced Ron Atkinson in November 1986. His immediate priority was to stabilise performances and assess the squad, leading to gradual improvement as the season progressed. United eventually finished 11th in the First Division, highlighted by a memorable 1–0 Boxing Day victory away to Liverpool F.C.. Peter Davenport finished as the club’s top scorer with 16 goals in all competitions.
The 1987–88 campaign showed significant progress, as Ferguson’s first full season in charge saw key additions such as Brian McClair and Viv Anderson begin to reshape the squad. McClair became a standout performer, scoring 31 goals in all competitions and becoming the first United player since George Best to reach 20 league goals in a single season.
United mounted a serious title challenge throughout the campaign, ultimately finishing 2nd in the First Division behind a dominant Liverpool side. While trophies narrowly escaped them, the team’s consistency, attacking improvement, and renewed identity signalled a major shift in direction. Bryan Robson remained the inspirational captain, driving the team through a period of rapid transformation.
This away shirt is closely associated with the foundation years of the Ferguson era, an era that replaced uncertainty with structure and set Manchester United on the path to sustained success.
