Description
Home shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1986–87 and 1987–88 seasons, a pivotal era marking the arrival and early transformation of the club under manager Alex Ferguson. This period is widely regarded as the true beginning of United’s modern identity, as Ferguson took charge of a struggling side and steadily rebuilt it into genuine title challengers.
The shirt features a traditional red base, complemented by a white neckline and matching white cuffs, both detailed with red and black striping. White detailing runs down the sleeves, giving the kit a sharp, structured appearance that reflects the increasing discipline and organisation being introduced during Ferguson’s early tenure.
The 1986–87 season began in crisis, with United languishing near the relegation zone before Ferguson’s appointment in November 1986 following the dismissal of Ron Atkinson. His immediate focus was stabilising results, restoring discipline, and assessing the squad. Despite the difficult start, United recovered to finish 11th in the First Division, including a notable 1–0 away win over Liverpool F.C. on Boxing Day. Peter Davenport finished as top scorer with 16 goals in all competitions.
The following 1987–88 campaign marked a dramatic leap forward. With new signings such as Brian McClair and Viv Anderson, Ferguson began shaping a more balanced and competitive side. McClair in particular thrived, becoming the club’s leading scorer with 31 goals in all competitions and the first United player since George Best to score 20 league goals in a season.
United mounted a serious title challenge, ultimately finishing 2nd in the First Division behind a dominant Liverpool side. Although silverware narrowly eluded them, the season represented a major breakthrough, with strong performances across league and cup competitions. Bryan Robson remained the inspirational captain throughout, anchoring a side that was rapidly evolving in both mentality and ambition.
Together, these two seasons represent the foundation of the Ferguson era, transforming Manchester United from inconsistency into a disciplined, upward-moving force that would soon dominate English football.
