Description

Third shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1990–91 season, most famously associated with the club’s historic 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph under manager Alex Ferguson. This campaign marked a pivotal moment in United’s modern history, as Ferguson secured his first European trophy and established the foundations of a winning mentality that would define the club for decades.

The shirt features a clean white base, finished with a red collar and matching cuffs, both detailed with white and black striping. Red and black detailing runs down the sleeves, giving the kit a sharp, distinctive look that became synonymous with United’s European nights during the early 1990s.

The defining highlight of the season came on 15 May 1991 at De Kuip in Rotterdam, where United faced FC Barcelona in the Cup Winners’ Cup Final. In a match of huge historical significance, coming in the first season English clubs had returned to European competition following the five-year post-Heysel ban, United delivered one of their most memorable performances on the continental stage.

After a tense, goalless first half, Mark Hughes became the hero of the night with a decisive brace. His first came in the 67th minute, reacting quickest to a goalbound header from Steve Bruce, before he doubled his tally in the 74th minute with a brilliant finish after rounding the goalkeeper from a tight angle. Barcelona responded through a Ronald Koeman free-kick in the 79th minute, setting up a nervy finale.

Despite intense late pressure from Barcelona, United held firm, with crucial defensive interventions, including a vital goal-line clearance from Clayton Blackmore, ensuring a famous 2–1 victory and securing the club’s first European trophy since 1968. The result not only delivered silverware but also cemented Ferguson’s early legacy as a manager capable of building teams for the biggest occasions.

This third shirt remains closely linked with that night in Rotterdam, a symbol of resilience, tactical discipline, and the beginning of Manchester United’s return to European prominence.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
