Description
Away shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1995–96 season, a historic campaign under manager Sir Alex Ferguson in which the club completed the first ever Premier League–FA Cup Double twice in its history.
The shirt became instantly recognisable for its bold “invisible” grey design, created with a two-tone horizontal split across the body. The upper section features a lighter heather grey, which fades into a darker slate grey on the lower half. A thin red stripe runs cleanly across the chest, separating the tones and framing the sponsor area. Completing the look is a dark grey folded collar with red-and-white trim and a buttoned placket, giving the shirt a structured but understated finish.
The 1995–96 season is remembered as one of the most iconic title races in Premier League history. After a disappointing opening-day defeat to Aston Villa F.C., United were written off by critics, most famously through the “you can’t win anything with kids” remark aimed at Ferguson’s youthful squad. However, the emergence of the “Class of ’92”—including players like David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt—transformed the team’s identity.
United famously trailed Newcastle United F.C. by 12 points at Christmas before launching a relentless second-half surge. A key 1–0 victory at St James’ Park proved decisive in shifting momentum, ultimately allowing United to clinch the Premier League title on the final day of the season with 82 points.
A major storyline was the return of Eric Cantona, who came back from suspension in October and immediately re-established himself as the team’s creative and emotional leader. He finished as top scorer and was named FWA Footballer of the Year, playing a decisive role in the title run-in.
The season concluded in triumph at Wembley, where United defeated Liverpool F.C. 1–0 in the FA Cup Final, with Cantona scoring a late volley to seal the Double. From being written off early in the season to lifting both major domestic trophies, this campaign cemented the legacy of Ferguson’s young side and made the grey away shirt forever associated with one of the greatest turnarounds in English football history.
