Description

Away shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1996/97 season, a distinctive design from a campaign in which the club successfully retained the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson. Despite an inconsistent run of form at points throughout the season, United ultimately finished seven points clear at the top of the table, securing their fourth league title in five years.

The shirt itself features a bright white base with subtle jacquard detailing woven into the fabric, incorporating tonal club crests and abstract geometric patterns for a textured, modern 90s aesthetic. Its most defining visual feature is the centrally aligned chest layout, with a circular red-and-black club crest positioned beneath the manufacturer branding and the bold SHARP VIEWCAM sponsor sitting prominently in the centre of the shirt.

A black crossover V-neck collar gives the shirt its strong identity, finished with fine red and white trim that is mirrored on the ribbed black sleeve cuffs. The overall design reflects the bold, experimental styling of mid-90s football kits while still retaining a clean and balanced away-day look.

The 1996/97 season was notable for both dominance and unpredictability. United endured heavy defeats such as a 5–0 loss to Newcastle United F.C. and a 6–3 defeat to Southampton F.C., yet still maintained enough consistency to secure the title comfortably. It was also a transitional year in attack, with the emergence of Ole Gunnar Solskjær as top scorer and the continued rise of David Beckham, who famously scored from inside his own half against Wimbledon and was named PFA Young Player of the Year.

The campaign also marked the emotional end of an era with the retirement of club captain Eric Cantona at just 30 years old. In Europe, United reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals before being eliminated by Borussia Dortmund, highlighting both their domestic strength and remaining continental challenges.

As an away shirt, this design became closely associated with a successful but transitional season, blending United’s continued Premier League dominance with the emergence of a new generation of players who would define the club’s late-90s and early-2000s success.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
