Description
Away shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, a period that began in transition and ended in absolute football immortality under manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The shirt features a crisp white base with a subtle tonal jacquard weave throughout the fabric, giving it a textured finish that shifts under light while maintaining a clean, minimal foundation. This understated backdrop allows the bold graphic detailing to define the shirt’s identity.
Across the chest runs a striking horizontal stripe block, made up of a thick black band sandwiched between vibrant red stripes above and below. This tri-colour panel creates a powerful focal point and is echoed in the shoulder design, where matching red-and-black block striping extends from the collar down onto the upper sleeves, giving the kit a strong, structured symmetry.
The collar is a traditional black polo style, finished with red piping along the outer edge for contrast. Beneath it sits a deep V-neck placket bordered in bold red, adding sharp definition to the upper chest and reinforcing the shirt’s layered design language.
This away kit is most closely associated with one of the most dramatic two-year stretches in football history. The 1997–98 season saw Manchester United endure heartbreak after throwing away an 11-point Premier League lead, ultimately finishing second to Arsenal F.C.. The campaign was heavily impacted by the retirement of Éric Cantona and major injury setbacks to key figures such as Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, while still seeing strong individual output from players like Andy Cole.
However, the adversity of that season helped accelerate the emergence of the “Class of ’92”, including David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Nicky Butt, who became central to the team’s identity moving forward.
The 1998–99 season then produced one of the greatest campaigns in club football history. Manchester United won a historic Treble, claiming the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in unforgettable fashion. The season featured iconic moments such as the FA Cup semi-final replay against Arsenal, where Ryan Giggs produced his legendary solo goal, and the dramatic Champions League final in Barcelona, where late goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær secured a 2–1 victory over Bayern Munich in injury time.
Worn across this defining two-year span, this away shirt represents the emotional extremes of football, collapse and redemption, frustration and glory, and stands as a visual symbol of Manchester United’s journey from transition to treble-winning immortality.
